In a significant move aimed at addressing the rampant issues of ticket scalping and excessive fees, former President Donald Trump, accompanied by musician Kid Rock, signed an executive order that seeks to protect consumers and ensure fair access to live entertainment. The announcement was made during a press conference that highlighted the growing concerns surrounding the ticket reselling industry.
“It’s an honor to have you back, a friend of mine, Kid Rock—sometimes referred to as Bob,” Trump began, acknowledging the musician’s long-standing friendship and advocacy for the cause. “He’s been after something that is for the good of a lot of people, particularly the public, regarding ticket sales and the gouging that has gotten worse over time.”
Trump explained that he had initially been unaware of the extent of the problem but had quickly learned about the issues plaguing ticket sales. “I thought I’d check it out, and it is a big problem,” he said. “Kid Rock has been trying to get this done for 20 years, and I’m proud to say we got it done in just two weeks.”
The executive order charges the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) and the Department of Justice with rigorously enforcing existing laws related to ticket reselling, in collaboration with state attorneys general who have the power over consumer protection. This initiative aims to crack down on the abusive practices that have plagued fans of live entertainment.
Kid Rock, known for his outspoken nature, took the opportunity to express his gratitude for the swift action. “Thank you, Mr. President, because this has happened at lightning speed,” he said. “Anyone who’s bought a concert ticket in the last decade knows it’s a conundrum. You buy a ticket for $100, and by the time you check out, it’s $170. These bots come in to get all the good tickets to your favorite shows, and then they’re relisted immediately for sometimes a 400-500% markup. The artists don’t see any of that money.”
